On Friday, April 8th we (David and Doreen, Mark, Kyra, Ezra and Lillian) drove
to the Pacific Ocean to place Anne’s ashes in the sea. For
years our mom had been clear that when she died she wanted to be returned to
the ocean and we were glad that we got to honor that. She loved the ocean very
much and took great pleasure in looking at the waves and playing in the surf.
The ocean, especially the Atlantic Ocean had a powerful spiritual pull for her.
We drove to Fort Stevens State Park in Oregon by the mouth
of the Columbia River and walked out along a jetty of boulders. It was a windy
and overcast day and the surf was quite impressive. Standing on the jetty the
vastness and power of the Pacific was palpable. David used his best Frisbee toss
to throw the paper vessel with Anne’s ashes and some totemic objects into the
ocean. It floated for several minutes before sinking below the waves.
Anne spent much of her life as something of a nomad. She
moved quite often and more often would talk of moving or traveling. Now she’s
on a final nomadic journey wherever the Pacific currents will take her.
